History: Clary Sage started to gain high appreciation as a medicinal plant over 1,000 years ago. In the Arab world, it was called “the Elixir of Life.” It was used around the world for treatment of different conditions including insomnia, nausea, colds, fever, liver disease, epilepsy, etc. The Chinese used Clary Sage to treat infertility. The plant was also used in cleaning gums and whitening teeth. The British used it to make the so- called Sage tea, which was a very popular healthy beverage and is still common in some Arabcountries today. The Latin root word of Clary Sage is “salvare,”which means “to cure” or “to save.” Therefore, it is often associated with wisdom and longevity. For many centuries, Clary Sage has remained a highly praised medicinal plant.
Possible Uses: Clary sage essential oil has long been famous for its ability to calm anxiety and relax the mind and the muscles, as well as for being beneficial in relieving stress, tension and fatigue. It has traditionally been used to treat hot flashes and depression and is known for its euphoric action.
Gabriel Mojay wrote: "In terms of Oriental medicine, Clary Sage oil both strengthens Qi-energy that is depleted, and relaxes and circulates Qi-energy that is ‘stuck.’ Hence it is both an effective general tonic and a major antispasmodic."
The antispasmodic and analgesic properties make it a good addition to blends dealing with muscular stiffness and spasms, headaches and migraines. It is used frequently to help dull pain during labor and help ease menstrual pain.
It is well known for balancing uterine issues and as an agent to clean oily hair. There is also some documentation of its effectiveness in helping to relax the spasms of asthma.
