DescriptionBulgarian Organic Lavender is an evergreen woody plant that grows up to 1 meter (3 feet) tall, with pale green, narrow leaves and beautiful purple-blue flowers perched on a long stem.

Organic products and Certification process: Organic production in European Union, United States, Canada, Japan and some other countries is a heavily regulated industry. Organic products are produced using methods that do not involve modern synthetic inputs (such as synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers), do not contain genetically modified organisms and are not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents or chemical food additives. Other requirements include: use of farmland that has been free from synthetic chemicals for a period of three or more years; maintaining strict physical separation of organic products from non-certified products; and undergoing periodic on-site (usually twice a year) inspections of soil, water and production facilities. The organic essential oils are the purest oils and are the closest we can get to nature without actually being there ourselves.

HistoryAs an herb, Lavender has been in documented use for over 2,500 years. In ancient times, lavender was used for mummification and as perfume by the Egyptians, Phoenicians and peoples of Arabia. Romans used lavender oils for bathing, cooking, and scenting the air. The Romans called it “Lavender,” which may have come from the Latin verb “lavare” which means “to wash,” or from the word “livendulo,” which means “livid or bluish.” The flower's soothing "tonic" qualities, the insect-repellent effects of the strong scent and the use of the dried plant in smoking mixtures also added to the value of the herb in ancient times.

Lavender is mentioned often in the Bible, but not by the name Lavender. Rather, the name used at that time is “spikenard” (from the Greek name for lavender, “naardus,” after the Syrian city Naarda).

European royal history is also filled with stories of Lavender use. Charles VI of France demanded lavender-filled pillows wherever he went. Queen Elizabeth I of England required fresh Lavender flowers available every day of the year. She used it in tea to treat her frequent migraines and as a perfume. Louis XIV also loved Lavender and bathed in water scented with it. Queen Victoria used a lavender deodorant.

Rene Gattefosse, one of the founders of modern day aromatherapy, verified the healing and antiseptic qualities of lavender when he burned his hand badly. He used lavender oil, and the pain stopped and the burn healed quickly with no infection or scarring. Lavender oil was used to dress war wounds during the 1st world war, when medical antiseptics were in short supply.

Lavender is a unique fragrance produced by the combination of 180 different constituents and is widely used in the perfume industry to add a top or middle note to commercial products. In the world of professional sniffers, it has a green, hay-like sweetness and gives "fruity aspects" to perfumes and other scented products.

Today, main producers of Lavender include France, Bulgaria, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Russia, Australia, Japan, Canada and the U.S.
