Aromatic ScentBulgarian Rose Absolute essential oil has rich, sweet scent with warm and deep floral aroma. Its fragrance, among all rose oils, is the one that most closely resembles a true and fresh rose scent.

DescriptionThe Bulgarian Damask rose is a green bush growing up to 2 meters (7 ft) tall and its stems are densely armed with stout, curved thorns. The roses are a moderate pink to light red in color, and the flowers usually grow in clusters.

Rose Absolute ProcessThe difficulty of extracting rose oil from the plant has always caused it to be a very expensive substance. A rose blossom contains only about 0.02% essential oil, and it takes about 1,000 roses to produce just 1 gram of oil. The extraction of rose absolute is more efficient than the steam distillation of the essential oil.

Rose Absolute is a refined, liquid extraction of fragrant compounds (called “rose concrete”) from the fresh blossom. Although absolutes contain essential oil compounds, they differ from distilled essential oils. Absolutes are extracted with pure alcohol. The alcohol dissolves and absorbs the fragrant material. Then the alcohol is removed through evaporation. What's left behind is the pure, fragrant Absolute - a concentration of aromatic compounds including essential oil.

HistoryRoses have a long and colorful history. According to fossil evidence, the rose is 35 million years old. However, the cultivation of roses most likely began some 5,000 years ago in Asia. Since then, they have played a large part in the human experience, and have been symbols of love and beauty for thousands of years.

Greek mythology tells us that it was Aphrodite, the goddess of love, who gave the rose its name, but it was the goddess of flowers, Chloris, who created it.

The ancient Romans were great rose lovers. Their feasts might have been confused with celebrations of the flower, as it was not only used for decoration, but the petals were strewn lavishly across the floors and even sprinkled into the wine! Nobility filled their baths and fountains with rose water, and roses were also used for medical and perfume purposes.

Duringthe seventeenth century, roses were in such high demand in Europe that royalty considered roses and rose water as legal tender. They were often used as barter and for payments.

The rose oil was studied, recorded and documented in numerous books, including Enquiry into Plants, by Theophrastus of ancient Greece, Natural History, by Pliny the Elder of ancient Rome, and several books about traditional Chinese medicine, such as Food and Materia Medica, Observation of Medicinal Properties: A Supplement to the Compendium and Modern Practical Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The origin of the cultivated rose is often quoted as being the Gulf of Persia, which is now known as Iran. From here, the rose industry spread into Arabia, Egypt, Greece, India, North Africa and Europe. The Crusaders are given credit for bringing the Damask rose from Syria to Europe sometime between 1254 and 1276.

During the 15th century, Ottoman (Turkish) merchants imported Rosa damascena for cultivation to Bulgaria. There, it was reportedly brought to the town of Kazanlak by a Turkish judge, who cultivated the flowers in his own garden. A nearby valley provided the perfect environment for growing roses, thereby establishing what would later become the finest rose oil producing region in the world. This area is now called the “Valley of the Roses.” The distillate from these roses is called “Bulgarian Rose Oil” or “Bulgarian Rose Otto.”
